The History of Caracas Its beginnings


Among American cities, Caracas has a special importance as the birthplace of Simon Bolivar, the Independence Precursor Francisco de Miranda and the great scholar Andrés Bello. It contains the most colorful stories and anecdotes told by the best chroniclers and historians of Venezuela. This is his story. After a hard work, he founded a herd which he called San Francisco in 1558 and later, the brave Juan Rodríguez Suárez founded on the same site, the Villa de San Francisco, a population that lasted only four months to be destroyed and burned by the natives of these lands. A bloody struggle emerges in the following years. We heard a rumor that there were rich gold mines in the region, and the voracity civilized European intruders soon compete with the indigenous ownership of its idyllic site. Gradually, the Indians who had warred for their land and their lives were returning to silence and oblivion. It was well and in this way could be found the city of Santiago de Leon de Caracas in the same place in the valley of San Francisco. The foundation -1567 – “I take possession of this land in the name of God and the King” This was the words of Don Diego de Losada in founding the city of Caracas on July 25, 1567. It was a lovely place, happy and healthy climate. Next to him with him the Lieutenant Mayor of Avila and Andrea Gabriel Ledesma, who later died defending the city.
